Step 1: Complete Driver’s Education (Starting at Age 15)
- You can begin a DMV-approved driver education course at age 15.
- Must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction (online or in-person).
- Receive a Certificate of Completion (DL 400C) to qualify for a learner’s permit.
Step 2: Get a Learner’s Permit (Starting at Age 15 1/2)
- Be at least 15½ years old.
- Submit DL 44 form (signed by parent/guardian).
- Provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency.
- Pay the DMV application fee.
- Pass the vision and knowledge tests (80%+).
- Your permit is only valid once you begin behind-the-wheel training.
Step 3: Complete Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training
- Complete 6 hours of driving with a licensed instructor.
- Log 50 hours of practice driving (10 hours at night) with a licensed adult (age 25+).
Step 4: Pass the Driving Test (Starting at Age 16)
- Hold your permit for at least 6 months.
- Schedule and take the driving test at the DMV.
- Bring all required documents and a properly working vehicle.
- Pass the test to receive your provisional license.
Step 5: Follow Provisional License Rules
- No passengers under 20 for the first 12 months (unless with a licensed adult 25+).
- No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM without exception eligibility.
- Zero tolerance for alcohol in the vehicle.
Step 6: Get Your Full License
- After holding your provisional license for 12 months and turning 18, you get a full license.
- No further tests required unless there were violations.
